It is very interesting to see how the US military/political scene views the rest of the world threat-wise. There is such a culture of fear within the US and looking out from inside - they are afraid of everything even though this is the safest they have ever been.

And complains about the people freaking out. Apparently, carrying a gun is as natural as breathing.

Seriously? Would you use a can of soft drink as a weapon?

US centric - but ARE YOU LISTENING? Everyone talks about how cheap food is in the US. Fast food - yes. Restaurant food - no, not once you factor in the mandatory tip.

Probably not tomorrow. Or the next day. But there will be a reckoning. I don't think there will be a resolution but the country will slowly slide into debt and disrepair and eventually become a global backwater.

This article highlights just one reason why - the power that the rich and large corporates have over the government. The government should be there to protect the citizens - but the way that capitalism has become ingrained in the US psyche means that the government can't reign in the business...

The stories just keep getting scarier. And there are so many other countries complicit in this activity - Australia included.

Despite crazy homicide rates and stupid accidents (not to mention school shootings) - gun control is off the table.

White police officer kills a man (on video!) using an outlawed choke-hold and escapes indictment because "there isn't enough evidence". Scary stuff happening in the US.

Scary to think that Obama campaigned on the back of cleaning up Bush's mess - but hasn't done a lot of the big things he promised. Yes, there has been some marginal improvement but a lot of the big, behind-the-scenes stuff that happened with Bush still happens now.

Pity.

This is "security" out of control. And it smacks of what used to happen (might still happen) within the Soviet bloc during the cold war.

Companies in the US can choose not to supply certain types of birth control on their health insurance premiums if their religious beliefs are in conflict. So it's ok for the company to be able to exercise their beliefs but not ok for the person whose health is being covered?

A court has ruled that the "no-fly list" is unconstitutional - because there is no way to see if you're on it or appeal against being on it. Small steps...

My favourite bit: "Why deny it if it isn't true" - a denial is confirmation that the conspiracy exists. Madness. And this isn't just America - it happens here in Oz too.

No surprise to anyone who has been paying attention but the NSA (and others) have well crossed the legality line and it didn't have much to do with 9/11 - it was planned before then.

...if you're prepared to waste years of your life and significant funds to go to court. And even then the process is not certain. The only way you can find out you're on the list is to be denied entry to a flight - but then the US government won't confirm nor deny that you're on the list and there is no other recourse. Amazingly stupid system.

Well, not really. While there is a lot of good that has come out of the USA there are also a lot of bad things that have been done in the name of democracy.

One of the arguments about not bothering with gun control is that you can still kill people with knives and whatever other blunt objects you have to hand.

While that is true, there is nothing like a gun to project injury from some distance away. It is hard to get close to someone brandishing a gun. But it is much easier to contain the damage done by someone holding a knife or a baseball bat.
