This is pretty much common sense - but biofuels have been sold as the next big thing to save us from the oil crisis and even as a lower carbon polluter. But they aren't and they cause food prices to go up - and for valuable food to be used as fuel rather than feeding people.

I remember the denials from the tobacco industry - even though there was clear evidence that smoking caused cancer and other diseases. Same thing happening now with climate change. In 50 years the mainstream will wake up but will it be too late?

This gets quite funny about a minute in and even better IMHO at about two minutes.

Tony Abbot - the minister for women's affairs (really!) asking where all the ladies are in his delegation to China (and there actually were some, apparently). He knows the names of all of is male delegates but none of the women. Classy.

And this is the original article in which Turnbull called for a cost/benefit analysis of the original NBN project. Hypocrisy indeed.

This is a really good, simple explanation of HFT - and also an opinion on why it is "cheating" the market. Worth a read.

And our politicians in Australia aren't any better.

The closing line of the article: "These modern ignoramuses are doing worse than merely fiddling while Rome burns—they are staring at the flames, and arguing that it is not hot."

This only makes sense if you're wondering why the adventurers in the book just didn't get a lift with the eagles from the start.

Which is good, because our government and opposition think it is a good idea.

Let's be clear: retention of metadata is just about as good as the retention of the data itself. You can glean a massive amount of intelligence and information from metadata. It should not be kept except where required by court-ordered warrant or other legal instrument.

...and it is only going to get worse unless we act now. It is already too late to stave off many of the effects but if we continue to do nothing (or worse, increase our rate of warming by doing more of what we are now) then it will be catastrophic.

Took a friend and his two kids (hello to Charlie and Ali) for a very fast-moving trip along the powerlines. Nothing of interest until we were pulled up by a guy who admitted he "had done something dumb". Turns out, he had.

Some photos I found that I hadn't put up. Another CanTeen trip - not many photos from this one. This was a half-day trip to Wilbinga.

I had accidentally picked up a few of these behaviours - but there are always more to learn. It's about being better at work and better in your personal life.

...if you're prepared to waste years of your life and significant funds to go to court. And even then the process is not certain. The only way you can find out you're on the list is to be denied entry to a flight - but then the US government won't confirm nor deny that you're on the list and there is no other recourse. Amazingly stupid system.

This is very cool. Basically an easy way to get electricity into a remote area with very little infrastructure required. And highly transportable.
